Introduction
The MarBEC research program provides an integration of steps from discovery and genetic modification of organisms used for the production of high-value compounds, to development of bioreactors and separation processes, and finally to product formulation. These steps encompass the key stages of any production process for marine bioproducts. Additionally, MarBEC's research program addresses the key barriers to commercialization, and will thus provide the fundamental knowledge that will underpin the marine bioproducts industry.
Initially, this research program will focus on developing production systems for target products, while engaging in screening and sampling for new products. Developing new approaches for photobioreactor design, and understanding the fundamental problems associated with light provision, mass and heat transfer in these reactors will provide the tools to develop production processes for newly discovered bioproducts. In later years, our emphasis will shift to develop recovery and separation processes that recognize the labile nature of marine products. Follow the links below for a description of our thrust areas and the projects within them.
