     MarBEC’s Education Program provides interdisciplinary education in engineering and science at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, preparing students for industrial or academic careers in marine bioproducts engineering.
  • Our education program produces engineers and scientists who are equally proficient in the science and industrial practices of bioproducts engineering;
  • Our program assures that engineering and science students participate in a rigorous cross-disciplinary academic education and training program that enables them to transfer seamlessly from the classroom to an industrial or academic bioproducts laboratory;
  • Our program is responsive to emerging industry workforce needs by providing innovative lifelong learning opportunities for cutting edge knowledge and skills.
Bacteria Sample      Graduate and undergraduate academic training, industrial internships, teacher training, and continuing education for professionals are the components of our education program and focuses on the following:
  • A two-track system to assure a working knowledge of the supporting science and engineering disciplines that complement the student’s major field of study. New graduate and undergraduate courses have been created to augment the marine bioproducts option and will be offered in the Fall of 2000. In addition, existing courses will be enhanced to integrate marine bioproducts processes and production systems.
  • A UH/UCB jointly developed and taught upper division undergraduate Marine Bioproducts Survey course will be required of all MarBEC students. It was introduced in Fall 2000 and is cross-listed in several departments
  • A recruitment program has been developed between UH and UCB to attract highly motivated students for the recruitment of graduate students and for undergraduate summer interns. See our graduate recruiting and internships and REU program pages.
  • Industrial internships have established for graduate students and is actively underway. This program is modeled after the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program at UH.
  • Annual workshops are conducted for K-12 teachers and counselors. A brochure on education and careers in marine bioproducts is in preparation. Contact the MarBEC Ecucational Coordinator for more information.
